As part of the getting me back on track work I have added a gym workout to my daily routines. This has been help with help of friend and personal trainer Renee. It has been a bit frustrating at times — I think I should be progressing faster that I have. My son reminds me that ‘older’ people take longer than the younger ones to achieve fitness goals.

Some of the fitness goals involve the same son who is crazy into tri-athalons, and Warrior Dashes, and half marathons. I told him his next half marathon I would run the 5k part of the race and we would also compete in the Warrior Dash together along with his older brother.

I have received extra encouragement from Lisa, who ran my first ‘road race’ in three inches of snow last month. Next week she asked if I would join her in a 5k and I agreed.

My helpful gazelle-like son marked out places for me to reference to practice around home that would allow me to know how far I was running. I tried this on Monday. Since the youngest sons have taken turns being sick it has been practically impossible to get to the gym this week, so when an older brother was home I decided to try the suggested road route.

About 1.5 miles in — my knee, which honestly has been precarious throughout all training, decided that it was fed up with what I was trying to accomplish.

I am now wearing a brace, and on the advice of another friend I changed my status to the 5k with Lisa to a ‘Walker” instead of a ‘Runner’.

Enter the photo/inspiration pictured above.

Renee, always reminding me that it is alright if I do not make it to the “gazelle” status held by my son with it comes to half marathons and such, that it was still very cool all that I have been doing.

Now I have a knee in a brace saying that it would like to quit all this insanity.

Modification is necessary.

Walking this race will hopefully make it possible for me to still run with my son in his.

Modification also means that I may need to follow other ways in staying in shape and reaching fitness goals that do not require such irritation of my knee.

Reminding me that sometimes what you want to achieve requires learning different ways, and may not necessarily be the way that others around you have achieved the same goal.

It is hard to understand in the beginning that the whole idea is not to follow the world standard of success. Eventually you learn that when LISTENING you are guided to what it the absolute best for you …. the trick is to not allow your inner voice to be dissuaded by thinking that others are there before you or are better than you at achieving things you would like. We really, only need to improve ourselves, for ourselves … overcoming the inner doubt.

And that this philosophy can be applied to ALL aspects of our lives.

Thankful for friends that care,
Thankful for the healing shared,
Thankful for the progress made,
Thankful for all of you — who allow me to grow through the share.

Be Well.
