Do you know the song?

David Bowie.

HEROES

We can be heroes — JUST FOR ONE DAY

There are many, many interpretations of this song. Like any great song, I think it can mean to you what you need it and want it to mean — even apart from whatever David Bowie was originally thinking and feeling when he originally wrote it.

This was one song I was able to see live on the Reality Tour. The version I saw live is very close to the live version that is above, performed only two years before I saw the performance.

I seem to be going through the David Bowie videos lately. One of the performers I seem to gravitate towards when I need a pick me up.

But this song … Just for One Day.

Even though things are not perfect — even though there are walls to stand before — even though there are guns shooting overhead … in the midst of the greatest adversity it is still possible to love … JUST FOR ONE DAY.

It is possible to be a hero — JUST FOR ONE DAY.

I have heard this song countless times — and now, as I listen — it brings on a whole new meaning.

The beginning of the song is softer, lower. Nothing can change feelings of love and hope. Then in the middle of the song — dolphins appear. Free, swimming and the healing energy of dolphins. We were just reminded during service on Sunday of how dolphins are used in the rehabilitation and healing of all kinds of illness and people and children. That the dolphin energy is like no other. That combined with the calming and healing properties of water …. right in the middle of the song about lasting through all odds.

JUST FOR ONE DAY.

That is all the narrator asks — Just to live for THE DAY.

Be all you can be — be a HERO — JUST FOR ONE DAY.

As the song gets more urgent, more desperate — more knowing that there are certain things in life that cannot be changed, even when evoking the healing of dolphins — of the Universe Divine — it is still VERY possible to be all you can be JUST FOR THE DAY.

It is still very possible to learn, to love, to live and to give — to be a hero. If we remember to do the best we can, to plug along —

though depression
through disease
through divorce
though abuse
through financial strife
through family bickering
through friend hurtfulness
through change of seasons
though unfufilling work
through coworkers complaining
through lack of sleep
through grief and pain
through unrequited love
through the frustration of children
through lack of motivation and seemingly hopelessness
through ANYTHING

we are not alone — we are with each other — we can choose to be together — we can choose to be the absolute best we can be and remember to rely on each other and be each others help…

It is so very hard. So, very, very hard when it seems the world is nothing but stress and that nothing at all matters anymore. Sometimes the hardest thing we will ever do to keep moving, loving, living, trying and helping and learning.

But we can
“We can be safer. Just for one day.”
